Why it's time to try powder foundations again (2025)

Why it's time to try powder foundations again (1)

From lightweight skin tints and tinted moisturisers to full-coverage foundations that disguise every trace of fatigue and redness, advancements in beauty technology mean there’s now a perfect base product out there for every skin type and tone. But one format that's been forgotten in recent years is the powder foundation.

Compact bases were actually the very first commercially available foundation, created back in 1935 by one Max Factor. Dubbed 'Pan-Cake', Factor originally developed it for actresses to use on set as films entered the Technicolor era, before launching it for the masses. Applied with a damp sponge, Pan-Cake make-up came in limited shades and as expected, delivered exceptional coverage fit for the silver screen. Other brands followed suit, but somewhere along the way, powder foundation - which use tinted powder pigments – developed a reputation for appearing cakey and heavy compared to its silky, liquid counterpart.

Powder foundations: the Bazaar top five

What are the benefits of powder foundation

If you've been a victim of the mask-like 'pancake face', worry not. Modern formulas are now made with such ultra-fine powders, they look imperceptible on skin. They also make an excellent foundation for oily skin. "Powder foundations absorb oil and to create an airbrushed finish that lasts throughout the day," says Amy Conway, Bobbi Brown's Global Pro Artist.

However, it's a myth that dry skin types can't use powder foundations. Simply prep the complexion using a cushioning moisturiser (or a hydrating primer), dust on your powder base lightly and use a finishing spray to set. Or, use a powder foundation to lock in your liquid base for extra longevity and coverage.

How to apply powder foundation

"I love to apply powder foundation with a brush to keep it from looking cakey. A large a powder brush will give a more sheer and even application which is great for every day. A smaller and denser brush will give full-coverage results which is great for spot coverage where needed," suggests Conway.

Considering how powder foundations provide both long-wear and a buildable finish, they're especially useful for quick applications in the morning. No more fiddling with multiple products, as a compact will do the job perfectly. They're also great for acne-prone complexions with sore, active blemishes. Applying with a soft sponge or fluffy brush will minimise painful friction on the inflamed areas. Keep a face mist on hand to freshen up your complexion throughout the day.

Despite the high coverage, this formula manages to create a natural-looking (albeit perfected) result with a velvety, soft matte finish. It makes disguising inflamed blemishes, acne scars and uneven skin tone a breeze; simply use the powder puff (or a dense buffing brush) to gently sweep on the product. It stays smooth throughout the day without going greasy, caking or looking like a mask.

This buildable formula features kaolin to help minimise excess shine, even in humid weather. It is Fenty, so expect an excellent shade range - 51 hues to be exact. The light-as-air texture also makes it a great setting powder alternative to lock in your base, especially for long summer days.
